Me Myself and Lies

It’s kind of a big day in the life of Kelly Brown.  Lunch with a good friend, some cosmetic touches on the new blog, and a starting a new Bible study- Me Myself & Lies: A Thought-Closet makeover by Jennifer Rothschild.  Come join me on this adventure as we fill our hearts and minds on spiritual truth.

Today was my first day of the study.  I have never done a Rothschild study before.  My previous book studies have in large part been Beth Moore, coupled with a Joe White study, and a couple of others that I can’t put a name on right now.  After day 1 though, I would recommend it!  I’ll give you my final review at the end of this seven week study.

Today’s devotion focuses on this idea of a thought-closet.  Each word that we use conveys a thought.  Some words are good while others are bad.  Matthew 12: 34 says “The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart” (HCSB).  Basically, our mouths reveal what’s in our hearts.  Verse 35 goes on to say “A good man produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil man produces evil things from his storeroom of evil.  According to Rothschild, The Greek word for storeroom is thesauros.  The term thesaurus, used to describe a storeroom (collection) of words, is derived from this word.  This begs us to ask the question, what kind of words do we have in our storeroom?  Are they pure?  These words, remember, come from the heart.

We often use these words to describe ourselves.  In 10 words, how might you describe yourself?  You would inevitably use some nouns to describe you- for me, that might be wife, sister, daughter, teacher, friend.  But we would also likely use adjectives- things like kind, loyal, smart, funny.  In all honestly it was kind of hard for me to write down words that I would use to describe myself.  It also made me think though, “Are these the words that I want to be described as?  Is this also what other would say about me?”

My newest hobby….quilting!

At the beginning of the summer, I had a random urge to pick up quilting.  My mother-in-law had told me of a nice quilting shop nearby, so I decided to go check it out for myself.  I went in, and a wonderful lady (Elise) helped me pick out a pattern and fabric for my first quilt!!  I set up an appointment to come back and get a private quilting lesson with Elise.  I went back the following week for an hour-long lesson, where I was equipped with all of the knowledge I needed to be a successful quilter!  (Notice I said knowledge, and not skill– I am still working to develop my skills!)  In the weeks that followed, I worked off-and-on cutting and piecing together my fabric.  As of yesterday, I have finished all of my individual squares and laid them out into their final pattern.

Now, I just have to take the 20 individual squares and sew them all into one big piece!  And then comes the actual quilting part.  The part that I am not so good at.  I took a lesson in that this week. This was a group lesson, and it was supposed to be for beginners- but I think in this lesson, I was the ONLY beginner!  Everyone else had their fancy $1,000 sewing machines and knew all of the quilting jargon- me on the other hand, well I have a really vintage sewing machine.  And when I say vintage, I mean the 1975 model Singer.  Here she is….my little beauty!

My dad got this sewing machine for my mom for one of their early anniversaries.  Since then, its been hiding beneath her sewing table for the last 35 years.  I am not sure she ever once used it, but there was some navy thread in it, so maybe she did many moons ago.  Not in my lifetime though.  Despite this fact, when I pulled out my mom’s little Singer, she worked like a charm!  Now, she does have her limitations.  Unfortunately, I probably won’t be able to finish my quilt on this machine as it doesn’t allow me to “lower the feed dogs” (for those of you who understand quilting jargon) but she works perfectly for simple sewing projects!
